Studio apartment

A studio apartment is a single open room that serves as living room, bedroom and often kitchen all at once, with the bathroom typically being the only fully separate space. There's no bedroom door to close, which means every function of the home has to share one footprint.

Because a studio has no built-in walls to separate activities, the layout depends entirely on how you zone the room yourself. Furniture placement, rugs and lighting do the job that walls would normally do in a one-bedroom, marking where the sleeping area ends and the living area begins.

Room dividers, whether a freestanding screen, an open shelf unit, or a curtain on a tension rod, are the most common tool for creating that separation without construction or losing your deposit. Multi-use furniture also matters more in a studio than almost anywhere else, since a single room has to absorb every function a full apartment would otherwise spread across several rooms. Rugs and lighting placement reinforce the same zoning, giving the eye a visual cue for where one activity area ends and the next begins, even without any physical barrier.
