Furniture that fits the floor plan on paper often does not work in practice, because the space a piece needs includes the clearance around it, not just its footprint. This chart lists standard dimensions for common furniture alongside the walkway and use clearances that determine whether a room actually functions.

## Seating

Loveseat: 52-64 inches / 130-160cm wide, 32-38 inches / 80-95cm deep.

Three-seat sofa: 72-90 inches / 180-230cm wide, 32-40 inches / 80-100cm deep.

Apartment sofa: 68-80 inches / 172-200cm wide, and often 30-34 inches / 76-86cm deep, specifically cut shallower for small rooms.

Armchair: 30-36 inches / 76-90cm wide, 32-40 inches / 80-100cm deep.

Coffee table: 36-48 inches / 90-120cm long, 18-24 inches / 45-60cm deep, and ideally about two thirds the length of the sofa it serves. Leave 14-18 inches / 35-45cm between table and sofa.

## Tables and dining

Dining table (4 people): 36-48 inches / 90-120cm square or round, or 48 x 30 inches / 120 x 76cm rectangular.

Dining table (6 people): 60-72 inches / 150-180cm long, 36 inches / 90cm wide.

Standard table height: 30 inches / 76cm. Counter height: 36 inches / 91cm. Bar height: 42 inches / 107cm.

Each seated diner needs 24 inches / 60cm of table width. Leave 36 inches / 90cm of clearance behind each chair for someone to pull out and stand, and 44 inches / 112cm if people need to walk behind a seated person.

## Beds and bedroom

Twin: 38 x 75 inches / 96 x 190cm. Twin XL: 38 x 80 inches / 96 x 203cm.

Full/Double: 54 x 75 inches / 137 x 190cm. Queen: 60 x 80 inches / 152 x 203cm. King: 76 x 80 inches / 193 x 203cm.

Leave at least 24 inches / 60cm on each side you need to walk, and 36 inches / 90cm at the foot if there is a walkway there.

Nightstand: 18-24 inches / 45-60cm wide, ideally level with the top of the mattress.

Dresser: 36-60 inches / 90-150cm wide, 18-20 inches / 45-50cm deep, plus 36 inches / 90cm in front for drawers to open and a person to stand.

## Clearances that decide whether a room works

Main walkway through a room: 30-36 inches / 76-90cm minimum.

Secondary path (between a sofa and a wall, for example): 24 inches / 60cm.

Between sofa and coffee table: 14-18 inches / 35-45cm, close enough to reach, far enough for legs.

TV viewing distance: roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal for comfortable everyday viewing.

Measuring the clearance before buying, rather than only the furniture footprint, is what separates a small room that feels efficient from one that feels blocked. Masking tape on the floor marking the full outline plus clearance is the cheapest way to test a purchase in advance.
