Footprint

Footprint is simply the floor space a piece of furniture takes up when you look straight down at it, usually given as a width by depth measurement. It's the number most product listings lead with because it's easy to compare at a glance.

The catch is that footprint alone doesn't tell you whether a piece will actually fit your life in a small room. Two nightstands can share the exact same footprint, but one has doors that swing open and the other has drawers that slide out, so they need very different amounts of clearance to function.

For small-space shopping, the more useful habit is pairing footprint with clearance and overall furniture dimensions before buying, especially for anything with moving parts like drawers, doors or a fold-out mechanism. A piece with a small footprint but poor clearance can end up feeling more cramped than a slightly larger piece that was designed with usable space in mind. Product listings usually lead with footprint because it's the easiest single number to compare across brands, but treating it as the whole picture is a common source of buyer's remorse in small rooms.
