BTU
British Thermal Unit, the rating used to size heating and cooling equipment to a room's actual dimensions.
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and measures how much heating or cooling output an appliance, like a space heater or portable air conditioner, can produce. Every heater and AC unit is rated in BTUs so it can be matched to the size of room it's meant to condition.
Sizing matters in both directions. A unit rated too low for the room struggles to reach a comfortable temperature and runs constantly, while one rated too high cycles on and off quickly, wasting energy and, for air conditioners, often leaving the room feeling clammy because it cools the air faster than it removes humidity.
For a small bedroom or studio, that usually means looking for a heater or AC sized specifically for a small-room BTU range rather than a generic all-purpose model, and checking the manufacturer's square-footage guidance rather than guessing. Getting the BTU rating right is also what keeps a portable heater from either underperforming or becoming a safety and energy-bill problem in a tight space. Pairing the right BTU rating with a draft stopper on doors and windows reduces how hard the unit has to work in the first place.
